    SOLDIER'S WEDDING AT OADBY
From the Trenches to the Altar and Back in a Week

Leicester An interesting wedding took place at the Parish Church, Oadby, on Saturday, when Corporal C. Grainger, 1 st Leicester Regiment, son of Mr. Tom Grainger, Oadby, was married to Miss Edith E. Worley. The bridegroom was in the trenches with the 1 St Leicesters less than a week ago, and returns to Belgium on Sunday. Corporal Grainger has been in the thick of the fighting since September last, and has more than earned his rest. Being a reservist he was called up on the outbreak of hostilities, and shortly afterwards was promoted corporal.
As "Captain" Granger he was one of the most popular and enthusiastic officers of the Battalion of the Church Lads' Brigade, and was with the Oadby Company at Prestatyn Camp in August last when the news came ordering him to rejoin his regiment. He has two brothers at the front, one of whom has recently been wounded for the second time. A third brother has joined the 3 / 4th Leicesters, and a brother-in-law is also serving with the colours. Corporal Grainger has seen 13 years service altogether, and was in India for a number of years.
Both the bride and bridegroom are well known church workers, and are connected with quite a number of social organisations in the district. The wedding caused a stir in the village. There were a large number of people present anxious to honour a local warrior who had just come straight from the front. The bride wore a navy blue costume, and was given away by Mr. Harry Chamberlain. Miss Doris Grainger, sister of the bridegroom, was the bridesmaid and Pte William Grainger, brother of the bridegroom acted as best man. The Rev. Isaac Raine officiated and the wedding march was rendered by the organist, Mr. W. Siddons. The church bells were also rung in honour of the occasion. The Church Lads' Brigade, with drum and bugle band, formed a guard of honour to their "captain" and his bride, and escorted the happy couple through the village street.
Amongst the wedding presents was a silver egg stand from fellow officers of the Leicestershire Cadet Battalion, and a pair of antique vases from Mr. and Mrs. Hodges, of Oadby Frith.

    NB.
The organist Mr. W. Siddans (previously Siddons) mentioned above, Is most probably of the prominent local family of drapers Established in 1867 by William Siddons and his wife Ann both born abt. 1842. It was later taken over by his son Walter born 1870 and his dau. Florence born 1878. The double fronted shop (Which as kids we were dragged to for mothball smelling school uniforms in the 1940's) on London Road between Albion Street and New Street Oadby closed in around the 1970,s? on the death of the lady (Miss Siddans?or a Miss Smalley who worked in the shop all her life). The Siddans family lived in a prominent house on the north side of New Street next to Denmans shoe factory( E.A.S. signs factory now in 2002). The organist could have William or Walter although Walter was a Baptist and the wedding C.of E..
Mr Siddans also owned a meadow where in Nov. 1917 a comic football match was held by about 30 competitors dressed in a multitude of different costumes and the referee was a MR. G. Grainger attired as a Scottish soldier who used an old umbrella on the unruly players to the great amusement of the spectators.
Prize winners. W. Lane, dressed as Uncle Sam, E. Hurst as a Sweep and B. Wragg as a servant. The effort raised £26. a lot of money in those days.

Biography

  • Birth: Tom Granger was born on 21 November 1889 in Oadby, Leicestershire, England.1
  • Death: He died on 13 November 1915, at age 25, in Oadby, Leicestershire, England, died in Oadby after being wounded in France during World War 1. age 26. Lance Corporal No 7786, 1st B. Leicestershire regiment.
Info from "Uncle Bill" was that he, Tom, was wounded in battle and brought home to a military hospital in Lincolnshire where he recovered sufficiently to return to France.
However he was run down by a lorry on a dark night as he returned to camp. The bare record of his death is attached: there could have been very few WW1 victims who were brought home to be buried with military honours in their own village but Tom had a further rare distinction:- his mother died before the war ended and was buried in the grave beside him.

On Friday November 19th 1915 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “YORKSHIRE FATALITIES” – TWO LEICESTER MEN KILLED. By a curious coincidence, two men belonging to Leicester, met their deaths at Hull on Saturday, In the first case, Arthur James Holmes, 18, an ordinary seaman, of 22, Grafton-street, Leicester, who was attached to a vessel lying in the new King George Dock, at Hull, was discovered at 6.15 on Saturday morning, lying dead at the bottom of the dock. Deceased was last seen alive by a comrade, named Fred John Thomason who was on sentry duty near the ship, on the jetty, and to whom the deceased at about eight o’ clock on Friday night, brought a cup of tea. After that Holmes returned to the ship, and Thomason never saw him again until he discovered his dead body at dawn. Apparently Holmes had been about again, and, as a terrible gale was blowing all night, he is surmised to have been blown off the edge of the jetty, to the bottom of the dock, a drop of 36ft. in the second case Lance-Corpl. Grainger, of the Leicester Regiment, who belonged to Oadby, in Leicestershire, was crossing a country road at Patrington, in East Yorkshire, when he was knocked down by a motor car. The injured soldier was removed to Patrington Hospital, where he expired. The inquest was held on Monday.
